Summary: Cancerman discusses his life and his goals. The Rest of the Interview The project? (laughs) How did you find out...? Oh, you’ve spoken to him. He tried to dissuade you from coming here to see me, didn’t he? And you disagreed. Well, I am glad to have this opportunity to tell my side of things. But I can see that he has persuaded you to his mode of beliefs. Well, that was to be expected. He can be very persuasive at times. Fortunately, he has failed to persuade anyone in power of his beliefs. Why fortunately? Because this project, which is so hateful to him, is the last line of defense for the human race. If we hadn’t poured our lives into it these past decades, humanity would be left with nothing! Nothing! As it stands now we have a chance to adapt, and to survive. Perhaps to fight back, some day. That will be his task, too. Why did I have Scully abducted? And then why did I return her? As he undoubtedly told you, I like him. I like her, too. She was taken to divert him from his quest. She had become too useful to him, too dogged and scientific. There was danger of his being believed. But after she was taken we discovered our mistake. She had also become his center, his stability. After we took her it seemed a shame to let that genetic material go to waste, so she became part of the hybridization program. A pity, her reaction to the branched DNA was not all we hoped. Later, the decision was made to return her to Mulder, we thought in time to save her life. Oh yes, I had the chip put into her neck; it prevents the nastier side effects of the treatments. The cancer. Unpleasant disease...cancer. I had a relative who died of it. Fortunately Agent Scully was as resilient as we had thought, and she retains very little memory of her time with us, as we anticipated. And Mulder’s life went back to its normal course. He has needed curbing from time to time since then, but as I said earlier, I watch him. I feel no remorse for my actions. Why should I? I have done what was necessary, what the others haven’t had the guts to do. Without my willingess to do what is expedient, this project could never have progressed as far as it has. And I have sacrificed for this cause. I will probably lose more that I hold dear before it’s over, but I’m prepared for that. Would I kill him if I had to? If necessary. It would sadden me to be forced to it, but he’s a grown man. He knows the risks. If his pain or his death become necessary, of course I’ll do it. And I’ll do it myself, not delegate it to others. I owe him that, at least. It is a pity that he hates me. We have much in common, he and I. I kick myself for not having made his acquaintance earlier in his career. But I had placed people I trusted around him instead, and decided to keep my distance. His mother would not have welcomed the knowledge that I was near her son. Her daughter is very like her, you know? Oh yes, I see Samantha from time to time. A charming young woman, not afflicted with her brother’s short-sightedness. No, I haven’t told their mother that I know where she is. Why cause her more pain? She won’t accept what I have to say in any case. And what do I hope for in the new world order? The return of those still with the colonists, I look for that. I hope for some power, some quiet, maybe time to do some writing. A family of sorts, and the opportunity to hand my work over to a new generation. If he survives, it will be interesting to see how his children turn out. (Laughs) Oh, he’ll have children, all right.... Well, it has been pleasant talking with you. It’s not often that a young woman takes the time to listen to an old man. Meet again? Oh no, I don’t think so. You already know much more than you should. You’d like to publish this? Now who would be interested in reading something so far-fetched? Here, let me have Alex escort you out. Besides, by this time tomorrow, you will have forgotten ever having heard of me. Alex will show you some of our labs, you might like to help with some of our research......
